On this day in 1912, aviator Harriet Quimby took off from the Cliffs of Dover in England and landed near Hardelot, France. This made her the first woman to fly across the English Channel. Despite the dense fog and the fact that she was flying a plane she had never flown before, the trip took only 59 minutes.
