Univited
Friend
I have a friend that lives in the same building as I do. She
always seems to come over when I have a friend over. And when she
is over, she always gets all the attention, then she gets insulted
anyway. What should I do?

We realize it can be difficult sometimes when a friend just “drops
in” when you have another guest. It’s usually not
a problem when all of you get along, but it can create tension
if one person wants to be the center of attention.
You
might like to talk this over with your parents. Since they know
the friend who lives in your building, they might have some ideas
about how you can handle this situation tactfully. For example,
you and your neighbor could agree to call before you visit each
other. That way, if you have other plans, you could explain that
you’re busy but you would like to get together another time.
If
your parents think you should just make the best of the situation,
though, you could try to get along better with this girl. Try
to focus on her positive traits and overlook some of the things
that bother you. Sometimes this helps friendships go more smoothly.
If she acts insulted over something, you could talk it over with
her. Talking openly and honestly might help her realize that you
care about her feelings. In turn, she might be more respectful
of you and your guests.
We
hope this helps.
Best
wishes,
