Making
Friends
I have no friends in school. What should I do?

We’re glad you decided to write to us about this. It’s
good to ask for help when you’re not sure what to do.
You
might start by simply smiling and saying hello to other students.
Sometimes that is enough to “break the ice” and let
someone know you’d like to be friends.
It
often helps to show a sincere interest in others. You can ask
your classmates questions about a recent assignment, their families,
their favorite foods and music, and their hobbies and interests.
People usually like to talk about themselves when they know others
are genuinely interested in what they have to say. Also, people
will usually ask questions in return. Having conversations like
this are often the way friendships begin.
Another
way to make friends is to join group activities that interest
you. That way, you’ll have a chance to meet other kids who
share similar interests. You might like to ask your parents, teacher,
or school counselor what is available. If you participate, other
kids will get to know you and you’ll get to know them. Before
long, you may find that you have a whole group of new friends.
As
long as you treat people with kindness and respect, you may find
that you make new friends easily. Also, try to remember that the
number of friends you have isn't that important. What really counts
is the quality of the friendships.
Your
parents can guide and support you as you make new friends. Other
trusted adults, such as teachers and school counselors, can offer
additional suggestions.
We
hope this helps.
Best
wishes,
