How to Make It:

Islamic art uses geometric shapes in its designs. Many mosques are decorated with mosaics or stained glass. Use this sun catcher to decorate your window during Ramadan.

  1. To make the frame, fold an 8½-inch square of black construction paper into quarters. Then fold the small square in half to form a triangle (see diagram).

  2. Cut out shapes from the two folded sides, but not from the open end of the triangle. Don’t unfold it yet.

  3. Repeat step 1. Place the folded cutout frame over the second one and trace the pattern. Cut out the pattern from the second triangle. Unfold both triangles. The frames should be nearly identical.

  4. To make the mosaic, glue 1-inch squares of tissue paper to an 8½-inch square of waxed paper. The tissues can overlap in any design. Trim any tissues that are over the edge.

  5. Glue one frame on top of the mosaic design and the other frame to the back.

  6. Make a hole at the top. String ribbon through the hole, then hang the sun catcher in a window.
