Capturing
a seal to study
|
Dear Friend,
Sometimes
no one can work outdoors because of a Herbiea dangerous
windstorm blowing loose snow. (The name comes from hurricane-blizzard.)
In good weather some of the scientists may search for
a Weddell seal to study. Heres one found near Tent
Island. It will be carried by vehicle back to the wet
lab, where the scientists will gently and carefully
attach instruments to its body. (The instruments come
off after a few days.) Then the scientists will let the
seal go beneath the ice.
Marine
mammals enjoy special protection in the United States.
Research on marine mammals (including photography) within
U.S. jurisdictions or when based at a U.S. institution
requires a permit under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection
Act. Bob Marstall, who took this photo, is listed on Dr.
Randall Davis's permit, which is Marine Mammal Permit
#821-1588-01.
Your
friend,
Bob
