Adelie penguin colony

Dear Friend,

I recently got to see the Adelie penguin colony at Cape Royds, which is on an island in the Ross Sea. It is an amazing sight! Adelie penguins are the smallest penguins in Antarctica. There were hundreds and hundreds of these very noisy (and smelly!) penguins waddling around, talking to each other, and making nests out of pebbles. I even got to see one penguin sliding on its belly and pushing itself along very quickly with its feet!

Since the ocean is still frozen around Cape Royds, I didn’t get to see any penguins diving into the water or swimming. Until the ice melts, they have to walk great distances on their short legs to find fish to eat.

Your friend,
Your friend, Bob
