Toads and frogs are amphibians and need to live in water at least during part of their lives. But toads are able to spend much of their lives on dry land, while most frogs stay closer to water.

Toads differ from frogs in other ways, too. Toads usually have shorter hind legs and are not as good at hopping, and their skins are often dry and warty-looking.
