Fill a jar with sand. Fill a second, identical jar with water. Slowly pour water from the second jar into the sand in the first one. How much water can you pour before water runs over the side of the sand-filled jar? Since the first jar was already full, where did the water go?

Explanation:
When we tried this activity, about one-third of the water fit into the sand-filled jar. It flowed into the tiny spaces between the grains of sand.
