Misty’s Mystery
Crash! Misty DeTech jumped out of her sleep. What was that noise?
She looked down from her bed and saw the case for her binoculars lying on the floor.
“Fact one,” she thought. “Last night I brought my binoculars to bed so I wouldn’t forget to check the thermometer this morning.
“Fact two: A loud crash woke me up. Fact three: The binoculars are now on the floor. I believe the noise that woke me up was my binoculars falling off the bed.
“Pretty good. I’ve already solved one mystery this morning.” Misty picked up her binoculars and went to the window. She pulled up the shade so she could read the sign at the bank on Main Street that flashed the time and temperature. She had decided to do this every day in April.
April is a tricky month for weather in Wisconsin. Knowing the temperature would help Misty decide how to dress.
What she saw was nothing. “What’s going on?” she wondered as she lowered the binoculars. Then she understood. There was a thick fog in the air. She couldn’t even see as far as the house next door.
“I’ll just have to guess how to dress today,” she muttered. “Here I thought I’d outsmart Mother Nature. But the first time I try to do it, she outsmarts me.”
Just then Misty’s younger brother Todd ran into the room. “You’re going to miss the bus!” he said.
“I am not.”
“I just saw it going past Johnson’s,” he said.
“Oh no!” Misty groaned. When the bus turned by Johnson’s Grocery it meant that it would be in front of Misty’s house in exactly three minutes and seven seconds. Misty was still in her pajamas!
“I must have slept through my alarm,” Misty said. “Get out of here and let me get dressed.”
Misty scrambled to her desk and put her schoolbooks in her backpack. She raced to the closet and grabbed a shirt as hangers and clothes fell in a heap on the floor. With her shirt half buttoned she jumped into a pair of striped pants that didn’t match her shirt at all. For someone as tidy as Misty, this was a tragedy.
Suddenly Misty looked out the window again. She stopped rushing to get dressed and instead rushed after Todd. Do you know why?
