How could she disappear? It was morning. It was the first of April.

Lisa looked out of the window. She saw new snow.

There were no dog tracks in the snow.

There were no cat tracks in the snow.

There were no tire tracks in the snow.

There were no tracks in the snow at all.

“I’m going out to tramp in the snow,” Lisa called to her family.

“Don’t go far,” said her big sister, Jo.

“Breakfast will be ready soon,” said her big brother, Pat. “Don’t stay out too long.”

“I won’t,” promised Lisa as she put on her boots and jacket. She went out the door. She took twenty big steps to the end of the walk and stopped.

Five minutes later, Mother said to Jo, “Call Lisa. It’s time to eat breakfast.”

Jo went to the door. “I don't see her,” she said.

Pat came to the door. “Look,” he said. “Lisa’s tracks stop at the end of the walk. She’s gone! There are no more tracks.”

“She didn’t cross the street,” said Jo. “She didn’t turn left. She didn't turn right. And there are no tracks coming back to the house.”

“There are no tire tracks on the street. She didn’t get into a car,” said Pat.

“She would never do that,” said Jo. “She would ask Mother first.”

“The only way she could have gone is up,” said Pat. “But she can’t fly, and there are no trees to climb.”

"She's gone!"“Mother!” called Jo. “Lisa’s gone. We can't see her!”

“Her tracks stop at the end of the walk, and she’s not there!” said Pat.

“Where can she be?” asked Mother.

“APRIL FOOL!” called Lisa, jumping from the hall closet.

“Lisa!” said Jo. “How did you get here?”

“How did you fool us?” asked Pat. “It was easy,” said Lisa.
