I
would be bundled in my bed, dreaming of dinosaurs and
dragons, when suddenly I would open my eyes. My heart
would thump, and my breath would catch, and there she
would be, sitting right at the foot of my bed
. . . if I met a fairy.
If
I asked, she would sprinkle her magic flower pollen on
me to make me small, and we would squeeze through the
crack in the front door and go off into the woods together.
Holding
my hand, she would show me how to dance with fireflies,
and a field
cricket
would let me strum a tune on its fabulous front wings.
A mint green luna moth would swoop down and take me for
a moonlight ride. Lacewings would flutter by to welcome
me.
If
it started to rain, she would share her umbrella with
me, and I would get to see
the
underside of a toadstool for the very first time!
She
would show me flowers that look like cats claws, birds
beaks, lions ears, doves feet, elks lips, and lizards
tailsgrowing right up out of the ground!
If I met a fairy, I could stay awake all night without getting tired, then sleep all morning as fairies do, curled in a silky milkweed pod. Late in the afternoon, a monarch butterfly would come and perch like a feather on my face and tickle me awake with its spindly legs. When I got hungry, I could nibble on chocolate root and sip dew from a buttercup.
We
would slide through an underground tunnel on the back
of a blind black mole with soft, silky fur and a pretty
pink star for a nose.
We would play hide-and-seek in the secret places where the tiny red efts hide.
The
next day, I would turn back into my normal size and take
my
fairy
friend to school with me. The other kids and the teachers,
too, would crowd around and ask ten million questions.
Thats what might happen
