Nutty Narrows Bridge

In 1963, a man named Amos Peters built a bridge. It’s not an ordinary bridge that you might walk across or zip over in your car. It’s called the Nutty Narrows Bridge, and it’s only for squirrels.

Mr. Peters built the bridge over a busy street in Longview, Washington. Squirrels had to cross the street to get to a city park, and many were getting hit by passing cars. Because of his concern for the squirrels, Mr. Peters designed a sixty-foot-long bridge that would allow them to cross safely to the park.It gives squirrels a safe way to cross the street.

People all over the world sent letters to Mr. Peters, congratulating him for his thoughtfulness. One man wrote, “Little men take time to cater to big people who might do them good. Only big men pause to aid little creatures.”

A ten-foot-tall wooden sculpture of a squirrel stands near the bridge in memory of Mr. Peters, who died in 1984. And the squirrels can still cross safely to the park.
