In 1963, a man named Amos Peters built a bridge. Its not an ordinary bridge that you might walk across or zip over in your car. Its called the Nutty Narrows Bridge, and its only for squirrels.
Mr.
Peters built the bridge over a busy street in Longview,
Washington. Squirrels had to cross the street to get to
a city park, and many were getting hit by passing cars.
Because of his concern for the squirrels, Mr. Peters designed
a sixty-foot-long bridge that would allow them to cross
safely to the park.
People all over the world sent letters to Mr. Peters, congratulating him for his thoughtfulness. One man wrote, Little men take time to cater to big people who might do them good. Only big men pause to aid little creatures.
A ten-foot-tall wooden sculpture of a squirrel stands near the bridge in memory of Mr. Peters, who died in 1984. And the squirrels can still cross safely to the park.
