Willy, the father of my first host family, is a mechanical engineer. We traveled south of Taipei to Hsinchu, where I saw his current project. It’s a mall called Windance (in English). When it’s finished, it will be one of the largest malls in Taiwan. It even includes a hotel, a grocery store, and business offices. Willy designed the air-conditioning system and is overseeing its installation.

I put on a hard hat and walked around the site as Willy and his engineers inspected the work. It was loud and windy (as it always is in Hsinchu, I learned), but very cool to see. I can’t imagine planning a building that large!
