Dear Friend,

One of my favorite hobbies is playing disc golf. It uses rules similar to golf and is played just about the same way except that you throw a disc (or Frisbee) instead of hitting a ball with a club. On each of the eighteen holes, the idea is to get the disc into a basket or to hit a target.

Lucky me—I discovered that there are five disc-golf courses in Taipei! So our group met up with Kuan Chen, who is the president of the Taiwan Disc Golf Association, and we played a course along the Tamshui River. This course uses pole targets that are marked with tape. To finish each hole, we had to throw a disc and hit the pole between two tape marks.

The rest of the group had never played disc golf before, but we needed a break from sightseeing and a chance to run around and be silly. Once Kuan and I demonstrated the basics of the game, we were off. We didn’t even keep track of how many throws we each made per hole—we just wanted to have fun!

Your friend,

Carla
