Excluded Sister

Dear Highlights,
My sister is 13 and she’s starting to ignore me when she’s around her friends. I feel excluded. What should I do?

It’s understandable that you’d want to be included when your sister has friends over. However, it’s natural for her to want to be with other people sometimes, too. You might try explaining to your sister that you’ve been feeling left out. Perhaps she will agree to let you spend a half hour or so with her and her friends before they go off on their own. Another idea is to plan to spend time with your own friends during those times when your sister is going to be with her friends.

In any case, it’s important for you and your sister to show courtesy and kindness to each other. Now and then, that means giving each other space.
