Scary Stuff

Dear Highlights,
Sometimes my classmates tell me scary stuff. I know it’s not real, but it keeps coming into my mind.
Emmett (by e-mail)

It might help to remember that you are in control of your thoughts. Think of your mind as a TV and you have control over the remote. When you find yourself on a channel with a scary thought, imagine yourself picking up the remote and switching to a different channel. Turn your focus back to schoolwork, friends, or other happy things in your life.

You could also ask your friends not to tell you scary stuff. If they start to share scary stories, you might ask them to change the subject, or you can simply leave the conversation until they talk about something else.
