Talking to Your Parents

Dear Highlights,
My parents are divorced. I never have the courage to talk to them about which parent I want to spend time with and what I want to do. How should I open up to them?

Even though it seems difficult, it’s good to let your parents know what’s on your mind. You might start by saying “I would like to talk to you about something. Is now a good time?” If the answer is yes, then try to explain your concerns in a calm, mature way.

Some kids have told us that it’s helpful to have this type of conversation while riding in the car with a parent, working side by side doing chores, or taking a walk together. Whatever time you choose, it’s likely that your parents will be glad to hear what you have to say.
