Try this gravity experiment with a stack of coins.
What You’ll Need
stack of coins
What to Do
Bend your elbow and lift it high in front of you, with your palm faceup near your ear.
Set a stack of coins on your bent elbow.
Now, suddenly drop your elbow and swing the hand that was by your ear forward to grab the coins as they fall.
If you don’t catch them at first, keep practicing. It is possible! But how? Think of your best answer, then read ours below.
How It Works
Your elbow gives an upward force to the coins, which keeps gravity from pulling them down. They are "at rest." Dropping your elbow removes that upward force. Gravity immediately begins pulling the coins down. But dropping your elbow also makes your hand swing forward quickly. You can move your hand faster than the coins are falling—and, with practice, catch them!
