Why do people have “red eyes” in pictures?

Red eyes can occur in a photo taken with a flash camera, particularly when the flash and the lens are close to each other on the camera. The light from the flash goes almost straight into a person’s eyes, where it is reflected by the reddish retina at the back of the eye and goes straight back out to the camera.
