Use a piece of wax paper or a paper towel to rub softened butter on the bottom and sides of a 9-inch square baking pan.
Measure the sugar, flour, butter, cinnamon, and salt into a large mixing bowl.
Rub the mixture with the tips of your fingers until all the butter is incorporated into the dry ingredients and the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set the mixture aside—this will be your topping.
Ask an adult to help you peel, core, and cut the apples into thin slices.
Then, transfer the apples to the baking pan and crumble the topping all over, making sure it is nice and even.
Bake your apple crisp for 40 minutes. The apples should be soft, and the topping should be crisp and golden brown. If not, you may need to let it bake for another 5 minutes.
Remove when done and allow the crisp to cool for at least 30 minutes before eating. Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream make this great dish even better!
